Summary

Having documented the famous cycling climbs of France and Italy, Simon Warren completes his trilogy on cycling’s Grand Tour nations with the 100 Greatest Cycling Climbs of Spain 。 Packed full of the legendary roads on the Spanish mainland which have found fame in the Vuelta a España, such as the Angliru, Puerto de Velefique, Lagos de Covadonga and the mighty Pico Veleta, the featured climbs travel the length and breadth of the country – from the Pyrenees, across the Basque Country to Asturias, around Madrid and down through Cataluña to Andalucía。 The book also travels out to sea to cover Mallorca and the Canary Islands。 These perennially favoured destinations for cyclists searching for year-round sun are home to some extraordinary climbs, from Sa Calobra on Mallorca, to Teide on Tenerife, and the incomparable Roque de los Muchachos on La Palma。

This is the third book in the series of 100 Greatest Cycling Climbs, after France and Italy。 If you are planning a cycling trip to Spain, Mallorca or the Canary Islands, you simply have to buy this book! Simon Warren has personally chosen all of these climbs, he's suffered all the way up each one, and so he knows what he's talking about。 Each climb has its own page, with a intro/description by Simon which includes all the details you need, such as the type of road surface, where the steepest parts are, and what to expect along the way, geographical descriptions, etc - and most importantly, how each climb feels。 The hardest part will be deciding which climbs to do, as the way Simon describes them makes me want to ride all 100! I really love the format of the book - handy pocket-sized - and each climb has a full-page image and the description next to it, including a fact file (height gain, average gradient etc)。 Simon's enthusiasm and love of the Spanish roads shines through, and makes you want to grab your bike and head there straight away, ticking off the list of all 100 climbs (which is handily available at the back of the book)。 Each climb has a difficulty rating (out of 10), which is really helpful when trying to choose and plan the climbs you want to do on your trip。 I also enjoyed reading his intro on the Vuelta, and in the middle of the book Simon gives his views on the hardest Grand Tour climbs。 He writes with expert knowledge combined with great humour。 A must-read for all serious cyclists。 。。。more

The format of this little book is simple - each climb gets a double-page , rating its difficulty from "hard" to "almost impossible", a photo (though why no photos that include cyclists?! If only to give a sense of scale。。。), a witty introduction, a fact file, basic map (best used in conjunction with Strava or other proper maps) and climb profile。 The font for the latter three is a little awkward to read, but luckily the longer text is far more readable, both in appearance and in content! The author's entertaining prose characterises each climb beautifully and his enthusiasm for each climb is infectious。 Even the most dyed-in-the-wool sprinter cannot fail to be tempted to indulge in some of these climbs! There's even space to log your successes in the back of the book! There is also a section about the hardest grand tour climb, which gives a fascinating insight into the arms race of climbs in bike racing。This is a fine little book。 I do wish the introduction was longer - the author's account of the writing process is filled with amusing nuggets like flagging down a German campervan for food after totally overdoing it, and I would have loved to have read more! 。。。more
